I have been shooting The Moth for about 5 years. The Moth is a series of story tellers that come up and share on a theme. The story has to be part of their life so usually the stories are really good. Anyways, one of the largest challenges for me in shooting this is that I am using a 70-200mm with a 2x tele converter. At the far end of my lens I can get a nice medium shot of the speaker. Which is good because that’s what they want.
However, since I am so far back and at the edge of my lens any vibration of the tripod is seen in the video which is pretty annoying. I’ve tried heavier sticks but it doesn’t seem to help. Anyways, it is what it is and they never complain about it when I deliver the footage so I just roll with it. Last nights story tellers were really good and it was a constant reminder that I had it pretty easy growing up.
This one speaker shared how he was beat by his Dad so badly he couldn’t sit down. I remember as a kid getting the belt on occasion but it wasn’t in the same league as what this guy was describing in his story. Takes a lot of courage for someone to open up about that kind of thing in front of a theatre full of strangers. The raw honesty was inspiring.
